Title:

  • Physician’s Reentering Practice: Know when to hold ‘em - know when to fold ‘em - know when to walk away - know when to run!

Live Session Date and Time:

  • 12/6/22, from 2:00 pm ET)

Description:

  • Returning to practice or reengaging in specific practice areas can be a complex process, both for the practitioner and for the hospital where they seek to practice.  The current provider shortage crisis may lead to more instances where a medical services professional (MSP) is asked/required/pressured to “make a way” for candidates who do not meet credentialing and/or privileging requirements. Is it up to you to alert your medical staff leaders that approving privileges for these practitioners after an extended leave shouldn’t be a slam dunk? How do you know when to “hold em” and when to “walk (or run) away”?  Do you know what resources are available to help your institution make these decisions? Do you know how to mitigate concerns about negligent credentialing? Do you have consistent policies to guide decision-making when addressing requests from practitioners to expand/change their scope of practice and/or refresh skillsets they have not used in several years?

MSPs struggle with how to objectively and consistently navigate the requirements of privileging and credentialing processes, while at the same time ensuring that patients are safe and well cared for as these practitioners regain their clinical skills. This session will identify the unique challenges presented by practitioners who have a gap in patient care or in experience in specific procedures or services. The session will include an overview of national reentry trends, guidance on reentry policies to ensure you have appropriate processes in place, review of approaches to facilitate an effective and safe transition to exercising clinical privileges, methods for monitoring to meet focused practice evaluation expectations, and presentation of case studies.

Learning Objectives:

  • Upon completion of this session, the participant will be able to:
    • Describe the current national trends related to reentry to practice and resumption of privileges due to changing demands in the healthcare environment
    • Understand how to effectively utilize the credentialing and privileging processes to consistently and safely support reentry processes
    • Identify resources or processes to support practitioners’ return to direct patient care activities or to their original scope of practice.
