Employment of Practitioners: The Critical Role of the Medical Staff Office - Webinar Recording

Title:

  • Employment of Practitioners: The Critical Role of the Medical Staff Office

Speaker:

  • Barbara Blackmond, Esq.

Description:

  • As hospitals and systems employ more physicians (and advanced practice clinicians), it is critical to align recruitment and credentialing on the front end and the back end. MSPs and recruiters should work together so that recruiters understand the credentialing process and time frames, know how to spot "red flags" and what the threshold eligibility criteria are. Recruiters should vet candidates before contracts are offered! But the alignment should not stop there. MSPs should anticipate future credentialing inquiries if employment is terminated and they should work with HR and counsel to review the terms of any severance agreements, non disparagement clauses and mutual releases. This session will include a Case Study: Gallo v. Mayo Clinic Health Sys.-Franciscan Med. Ctr., Inc. (Jan. 24, 2017). There, the Federal Court for the Western District of Wisconsin granted a health system's motion for summary judgment on whether it breached the terms of a separation agreement with a formerly employed physician when it reported her performance as “fair” in response to a hospital's credentialing evaluation. What can be learned from this case to avoid similar claims?

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand how to use the concept of eligibility effectively and how to coordinate with recruiters to promote success in employing practitioners.
  • Develop options to maximize peer review privilege protections in the exchange of information between the Medical Staff Office and group practice affiliates employing practitioners, in light of state laws.
  • Describe implementation steps that should be taken for a checklist and FAQ to share with HR/recruiters.

Who Should Attend:

  • Experienced MSPs who are looking for better, safer ways to align physician recruitment and credentialing.
