Date/Time:
- Tuesday, December 15, 2026 at 12:00 pm ET
Speaker(s):
- Brian C. Betner, Esq.
Description:
- Credentialing is an increasingly important responsibility of the medical staff office—and one of the areas where operational mistakes can create significant operational, legal, regulatory, political, and patient safety risks.
- Many credentialing problems arise not from intentional errors, but from process gaps, verification challenges, communication issues, or unclear practitioner qualifications or the application of applicants to qualifications. When these issues surface later—during a peer review investigation, accreditation survey, or litigation—they can place hospitals and medical staffs in difficult positions.
- This interactive session will explore a series of real-world credentialing scenarios that illustrate common operational vulnerabilities faced by medical staff offices. Participants will examine case studies involving problematic references, incomplete verification of practitioner qualifications, scope of practice concerns, and credentialing decisions involving practitioners with prior disciplinary histories.
- Presented from the perspective of legal counsel who regularly advises hospitals and medical staffs on credentialing disputes and peer review matters, the session will provide practical strategies to strengthen credentialing processes and avoid common pitfalls.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize credentialing process vulnerabilities that commonly lead to
regulatory scrutiny or legal disputes. - Apply best practices for primary source verification and practitioner
qualification review. - Implement strategies to improve documentation and defensibility of
credentialing decisions.
