Description:
- As a part of the credentialing process, Medical Staff Professionals collect and review medical malpractice history for the Department Chairs to evaluate at the time of initial credentialing, reappointment and the use of the continuous query option of the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB). Physician leaders play a critical role in assessing the data to determine overall risk to the organization. However, effective risk evaluation requires a strong partnership with Risk Management to establish specialty-specific risk thresholds, define patterns or trends in malpractice claims, and recognize that certain high-risk specialties may naturally have a higher volume of claims.
This session will provide guidance and practical examples of how physician leaders should document their thought process when analyzing malpractice data in credentialing and peer review. As part of enterprise risk management, MSPs can collaborate with malpractice carriers to proactively evaluate and monitor lawsuits and integrate this information into the quality and peer review process. In closing the presentation will identify the appropriate steps to take internally to ensure that these discussions and evaluations are treated as privileged and confidential, followed by a panel for Q&A.
