Title:
- National Practitioner Data Bank: A Deeper Dive into Reporting Adverse Actions
Speaker(s):
- David Loewenstein
Description:
Hospitals and other health care entities must report professional review actions against a physician or
dentist when:
- the action adversely affects clinical privileges for a period of more than 30 days and
- it is based on the practitioner's professional competence or conduct that adversely affects or could
adversely affect the health or welfare of a patient
The reporting requirement includes the acceptance of the surrender of clinical privileges or any restriction of
such privileges, while the physician or dentist is under investigation or in return for not conducting such
an investigation.
This NPDB presentation will take a deep dive into reportability by answering the following key questions:
- When does a routine inquiry into a practitioner become a professional review activity (investigation)?
- When are restrictions of privileges during an ongoing investigation reportable?
- How does a professional review activity become a professional review action for reporting purposes?
- What factors distinguish a reportable professional review action from a non-reportable action?
Learning objectives:
- Upon completion, participants will be able to describe NPDB clinical privileges action reporting requirements.
- Upon completion, participants will be able to apply the basics of reporting requirements to more complex scenarios encountered by MSPs.
