  • Additional State Licensing Pathways for Internationally-Trained Physicians: What Medical Services Professionals Need to Know

Speaker(s):

  • Elizabeth (Liz) Ingraham
  • Tracy Gill, MLA

Description:

  • There is increasing interest among state policy makers to improve patient access and reduce workforce shortages by changing licensure requirements for internationally-trained physicians (ITPs). Some of these additional licensure pathways for ITPs bypass certain traditional requirements, including requirements related to U.S. postgraduate training, also known as graduate medical education (GME) or medical residency. An understanding of this rapidly-evolving regulatory landscape for ITPs is essential for those who evaluate physicians for U.S. health care delivery settings. This session will provide an overview of these evolving pathways and how they differ from traditional licensure pathways; describe the work of the Advisory Commission on Additional Licensing Models (co-founded by Intealth, the Federation of State Medical Boards, and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) to support the alignment of policies, regulations and statutes to better protect the public and advance the delivery of health care; review the role of ECFMG Certification and its stringent requirements for applicants’ medical schools, identity verification, examinations, clinical and communication skills, and primary-source verification of medical credentials; and identify resources for medical services professionals with an interest in this dynamic topic.

Learning objectives:

  • Upon completion, participant will have gained familiarity with the various types of additional licensure pathways for ITPs and their core requirements and efforts to support alignment across these pathways.
  • Upon completion, participant will have a detailed understanding of the requirements for ECFMG Certification and the assurances they provide.
  • Upon completion, participant will know where to access resources to learn more and to monitor this topic for developments.
