Description:
- Is your medical leadership aware of the requirements of reporting to the NPDB and do they understand the immunity available as part of the peer review process? Each entity which takes a professional review action that adversely affects the physician’s clinical privileges for longer than 30 days must report that action. Additionally, if the entity accepts the surrender of clinical privileges of a physician who is under investigation by the entity relating to possible incompetence or improper professional conduct, or in return for not conducting such an investigation, those actions are also reportable. A “professional review action” is taken during professional review activity. It is based on the competence or professional conduct of a physician, and which affects (or may affect) adversely their clinical privileges. What’s reportable are adverse clinical privileges actions greater than 30 days related to professional competence or conduct; and surrenders of privileges while under investigation. Entities must report on physicians and dentists, and may report on other practitioners. Different elements and requirements of this reporting encompass investigations, non-renewals, withdrawals of applications, summary suspensions, denials and restrictions, and proctoring. Lastly, there are resources MSPs can use to better understand NPDB clinical privileges reporting, such as infographics, videos, the NPDB Guidebook, and the NPDB web site.
