Title: Telemedicine Privileging - Something New or Something Old?
Speaker: Todd Sagin
Description: The Covid pandemic has fostered a rapid leap forward in the delivery of 'virtual' health care. Over the past decade the processes for credentialing telemedicine providers have become clear as CMS and accrediting bodies have reached agreement on the basic requirements. However, no consensus has been reached over whether the delivery of medicine 'virtually' requires a new skill set for physicians for which they must demonstrate competence. This presentation will discuss why telemedicine is not just an alternative delivery modality for established privileges. The unique skills required to practice virtual medicine will be outlined and there will be discussion of how medical schools, residency programs, and licensing boards are thinking about teaching and vetting these skills. This will be an interactive presentation with facilitated discussion focusing on whether or not medical staffs should create and adopt special privileges for virtual medicine and the pros and cons of taking this route.
