• Bylaws can be great for providing guidelines for processes in the Medical Staff, but sometimes they create loopholes.  Efforts by organizations to get practitioners on staff who may not quite reach the "pinnacle" of qualifications or let board certification lapse, but are needed due to things like Critical Access, medically underserved areas, specific expertise, etc. The MSP needs to be ready to hold their facility to regulatory/accrediting/legal standards, but also not be seen as the blocker, but the facilitator.  We'll be discussing the bylaws requirements in regards to assessing current competence when prescribed training and/or board certification is not present.  What should we be requesting and how do we ensure we aren't opening the flood gates to every practitioner out there.

• Does your medical staff leadership struggle with how and when to intervene when faced with questionable clinical performance? Patterns of poor surgical outcomes, staff or patient complaints about communication issues, or colleague reports about skill deterioration can be signs of practitioner performance issues. Failure to intervene early and effectively could put patients at risk and lead to legal ramifications for the hospital and physician. Understand the medical services professional’s role in creating a truly accountable medical staff and an effective, consistent approach to addressing clinical performance concerns. The presentation will review a wide range of helpful resources, from FPPE processes to intensive skill-building educational courses and comprehensive assessment programs. Bylaws and policy implications and the MSPs role in influencing appropriate design decisions in these key documents will be explored. Relevant case studies will be presented.
